SFX Makeup for Brand Activations and Fan Conventions

October 13, 2026

Fans don't want to look at the show. They want to be in it. SFX makeup for brand activations gives them that: a scar from the series, a character's signature markings, a creature accent they can wear through the rest of the con. For studio and streaming launches, premieres, fan conventions, and Halloween campaigns, a character makeup station turns your booth into the place every fan photo starts.

This is the most theatrical station on our activation beauty menu, and it's where about 20 years of on-set TV, film, and commercial experience pays off.

At a glance

  • Throughput: typical range of 4 to 10 guests per hour per artist for mini-SFX and character accents
  • Footprint: roughly 6 x 8 feet per artist with a chair, work table, and lighted mirror
  • Power: one outlet per station for lighting and tools
  • Best for: streaming launch activations, film premieres, fan conventions, gaming launches, Halloween brand activations
  • Pairs with: photo ops, costume or prop moments, glitter and gem bars, airbrush tattoo bars with show iconography

Where SFX Makeup for Brand Activations Fits

  • Streaming launch activations: put the show's look on fans the week it drops. A signature wound, a creature texture, an iconic mark.
  • Premiere activation makeup: character accents for guests on the carpet, plus in-costume talent or walkaround characters who need to hold up under flash.
  • Fan conventions: the crowd arrives ready to play. A cosplay makeup station fills fast and feeds the hashtag all weekend.
  • Halloween brand activations: retail, beverage, and beauty brands running seasonal pop-ups where the makeup is the draw.

Mini-SFX Guest Looks vs. Hero Talent Prosthetics

This is the first decision in your scope. Guest volume and hero quality are two different jobs, and we staff them differently.

Mini-SFX guest looks (volume)

  • Wounds and scars: cuts, scratches, and bruising built with scar wax, gels, and color. Fast and very photogenic.
  • Character accents: markings, veining, scales, metallic details, or a signature symbol on the cheek or forearm.
  • Face paint characters: half-face or accent designs inspired by approved characters, done fast with stencils and water-activated paints.
  • Small pre-made appliances: pre-made small pieces (a scar, a horn nub, a texture patch) attached and blended in minutes.

Hero talent prosthetics (quality)

  • Full or partial prosthetics for costumed characters, walkaround talent, stage hosts, or influencers who are the face of the activation.
  • Built for close-up and hours of wear under lights and flash.
  • Scheduled, not walk-up. Hero looks are booked appointments with a dedicated artist and a clear call time.

Many activations run both: a hero character on the floor drawing the crowd and a mini-SFX station turning fans into the cast.

Proof: Wizard World Chicago

We've done this with real fans and real stars in the room. At Wizard World Chicago, City Lights handled beauty for celebrity guests. Convention pace is its own thing: packed schedules, photo ops back to back, and zero room for a late chair. That's the rhythm we build every fan con activation around. We've also worked with brands including Disney, Netflix, and ESPN. See more in our portfolio.

Approvals With IP Holders

Character looks carry legal weight. Studios and licensors care exactly how their characters appear, so approvals are part of the build, not an afterthought.

  • Get the reference pack early. Official stills, style guides, and any do-not-do notes from the licensor.
  • Design a look menu. We build 3 to 6 guest looks inspired by approved references and simplified for speed.
  • Test and photograph. We do test looks on a model and send photos for sign-off.
  • Lock it. Once approved, every artist works from the same reference sheet so the fiftieth look matches the first.
  • Build in time. Licensor review can take longer than you'd expect. Start early.

Camera-Ready Durability

Every look at an activation gets photographed. Plenty of them get filmed. Our work is built for that.

  • Sealed and set so blood effects don't transfer to costumes, props, or the next guest's hand
  • Edges blended on appliances so they hold up to phone cameras and flash
  • Heat and sweat plans for crowded convention halls and outdoor Florida premieres
  • Touch-up kits for hero talent so looks stay fresh across long days
  • Removal guidance for every guest, with safe removers on hand

Planning Math: Throughput, Staffing, and Footprint

Planning math and typical ranges. Your scope sets the real numbers.

Time per look

  • Quick character accent or stencil face paint: about 5 to 8 minutes
  • Mini-SFX wound or scar: about 8 to 15 minutes
  • Small pre-made appliance with blending: about 15 to 20 minutes
  • Hero prosthetic character: plan in hours, scheduled before doors open

Staffing

  • Per artist: roughly 4 to 10 guests per hour depending on the look menu
  • Smaller premiere or launch party: 2 artists on guest looks
  • Fan convention booth: 3 to 5 artists on guest looks, plus separate artists for any hero talent
  • Line host with reservations: a QR code booking system keeps fans exploring the floor instead of standing in line, and captures emails and UGC permissions while they wait

Footprint and setup

  • Space: roughly 6 x 8 feet per artist, plus a staging table for reference boards and prepped pieces
  • Lighting: lighted mirrors or ring lights at every station
  • Power: one outlet per station
  • Sanitation: disposable applicators, sanitized tools between guests, trash and wipes at every chair
  • Setup: about 45 minutes for guest stations; hero talent call times set separately

Make It On-Brand

  • A look menu built from the show with approved character art on every card
  • Branded station that feels like the set: props, set dressing, or a themed makeup chair
  • Artists in costume or uniform on request, white-label so they represent the title, not City Lights
  • A photo moment right beside the station with the key art and the hashtag
  • Takeaway cards with the release date, a streaming QR, and removal tips

What Producers Ask

Can you recreate a specific character exactly?

For hero talent, we build to the licensor's reference. For guest volume, we design simplified looks inspired by approved references so the line moves and the look still reads instantly.

How many fans can you get through in a day?

Planning math: 4 to 10 guests per hour per artist. With 4 artists over a six-hour show day, that's a typical range of roughly 100 to 240 looks. The look menu is the biggest lever.

Is fake blood safe on costumes?

We use products designed for skin and set them to limit transfer. For costumes the studio owns, we plan placement and product choice with your wardrobe team.

Do you travel for conventions and premieres?

Yes. 70+ vetted artists across 22+ U.S. markets, anchored in Tampa Bay, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami, with vetted local teams sourced under our name elsewhere. Running a multi-city tour? Look at our Preferred Partner Program.

Are your artists insured?

Yes. Our business insurance covers roster artists working City Lights bookings nationwide.
