Chicago vs Tampa: What Moving Taught Me About Makeup and Climate
I built City Lights in Chicago, on sets first and weddings second. Moving to Tampa Bay taught me that makeup is never one-size-fits-all. The climate, the light and what people want from their look all changed, and my technique and kit had to change with them. The standard did not.
Chicago: production first, and weather in two directions
In Chicago the work was television, campaigns and corporate — over the years that has meant WGN-TV, Nickelodeon and NASCAR, and headshot days for companies such as Kraft Foods. Winter meant cold, dry air outside and dry heat indoors, so skin needed hydration, cream textures held beautifully, and fuller coverage and matte finishes never melted.

Tampa Bay: heat, humidity and a different kind of beautiful
In Tampa Bay those same products did not hold. Weddings, corporate events and speakers under stage lights all needed makeup that was lightweight and breathable, with longevity built in skin prep rather than piled on with powder. That is where airbrush makeup became central to my work — water-based first, applied in thin layers, and only where it helps. (The honest version of what it can and cannot do is here.)
Different cities, different taste
Chicago clients loved bold, sculpted glam: sharp contour, statement lips, dramatic eyes. Tampa Bay leans sun-kissed, dewy and effortless — fresh, radiant skin that looks like skin. Neither is right. The job is to read the person, the room and the light.
Men’s grooming matters more than people expect
Business professionals, speakers and on-air talent in Tampa Bay need to look polished in person and on camera. Grooming here means shine control, redness evened out and concealment only where a lens would catch it. Done well, nobody can tell. It is a big part of our corporate and production work.
What did not change
One standard, every chair. A bride in St. Petersburg gets the same production discipline as a network shoot in Chicago: a written timeline, the right formula for the conditions, and an artist who stays for touch-ups. Everything is included, because we would never invoice a producer for lashes on a commercial, and we do not do it to a bride either.
“Moving to Tampa challenged me to rethink my techniques and expand my product knowledge. It made me a stronger makeup artist.”

Questions people ask
How is makeup different in Tampa than in Chicago?
The climate flips the problem. Chicago means cold, dry air outside and dry heat indoors, so skin needs hydration and richer textures. Tampa Bay means heat and humidity, so we build longevity in skin prep and reach for breathable, water-based airbrush in thin layers.
Do you still work in Chicago?
Yes. City Lights works in Chicago, Tampa Bay and Los Angeles, for productions, corporate teams, brand activations and private clients.
Do you do men's grooming for corporate events and camera?
Yes. Shine control, redness evened out and concealment only where a lens would catch it, so it reads as polished in person and on camera and nobody can tell.
Is airbrush makeup better for Florida weather?
Water-based airbrush is our first choice in Florida heat because it breathes and stays comfortable. No makeup is sweat-proof; what lasts is prep, thin layers, the right formula and a touch-up plan.
