Men's Grooming on Camera: Nobody Should Be Able to Tell

The point of men's grooming is that no one can tell it happened. Not the viewer, and ideally not the man in the chair once he sees the result.

Almost every man we work with sits down saying some version of “I don't wear makeup.” Ten minutes later he is watching playback and asking why he looks better rested than he has in a year. Here is what is actually happening in those ten minutes.

What grooming is for

Shine

Studio lights turn a forehead into a mirror. Controlling it is most of the job.

Redness

Shaving irritation, rosacea, wind, a warm room. Evened out, not covered.

Under-eye

Long flights and early calls show up as shadow on camera long before they show in a mirror.

Hair and brows

Grays tidied where they catch light, brows brushed, a stray handled. Nothing shaped or coloured without asking.

Scalp

Thinning hair reads as glare on camera. Powder fixes it in seconds.

Beard

Combed, edges checked, product where it is fighting the collar.

None of that is makeup in the sense men worry about. It is the difference between looking tired on a livestream and looking like the person your team knows.

How to make it easy for a reluctant executive

Call it grooming. The word matters more than you would think.
Explain the why, in one line. “The lights are going to make you shine. This stops that.”
Keep it to ten minutes, in and out, with no mirror ceremony.
Never let the room watch. A quiet corner or a green room, not the middle of the floor.
Show playback. The before and after on the monitor ends the debate every time.

Where it matters most

Keynotes and stage: stage lighting is brutal and the screens are enormous.
Livestreams and webinars: long, static, unforgiving, and often lit from directly overhead.

Commercials and broadcast: where continuity applies to men exactly as it does to everyone else.

Skin tone, texture and range

Ask any crew what their kit holds for deep skin tones and for beards. A grooming kit that only works on light skin is not a grooming kit. Our artists are briefed and vetted for range, the same standard we hold on every production.

Questions clients ask

Do men need makeup for video?

They need grooming: shine control, redness evened out, under-eye shadow softened and hair tidied. Done properly it is invisible on camera and the person simply looks well.

How long does men's grooming take?

About ten minutes a person for camera-ready grooming, which is why it fits neatly into a headshot day or a green room schedule.

Will it look like I am wearing makeup?

No. The test we hold ourselves to is that nobody watching can tell, including the person in the chair once he has seen playback.

Can you groom beards and thinning hair?

Yes. Beards get combed, edged and de-frizzed, and thinning areas get powder so the scalp does not flare under lights.
